Family-office research is complemented by relevant studies of family businesses, capital markets, property and financial decisions. Each article states the setting actually studied. An application to a family office is an editorial inference, not a claim that every original study sampled family offices.

How Billionaires Explain Their Philanthropy: A Mixed-Method Analysis of the Giving Pledge Letters

Hans Peter Schmitz; George E. Mitchell; Elena M. McCollim

Voluntas: International Journal of Voluntary and Nonprofit Organizations · 2021-03-12

Helps family offices distinguish public philanthropic pledges, reasons for giving, completed transfers and evidence of impact. Directly studies billionaire philanthropic discourse rather than family-office operations.

Original practical companion

From Giving Pledge to Verifiable Commitment: A Family Office Accountability Ledger

Public statements about generosity communicate identity and purpose, but they do not by themselves establish that resources were transferred or that social outcomes improved. Building on Schmitz, Mitchell and McCollim’s analysis of 187 Giving Pledge letters, this companion proposes an accountability ledger connecting a family’s explanation for giving to authorization, funding, delivery and evidence. The process preserves the legitimacy of multiple motivations while preventing aspirational language from being presented as completed impact. It is an original editorial design for testing, not a finding about individual pledgers.

Do ESG funds make stakeholder-friendly investments?

Aneesh Raghunandan; Shiva Rajgopal

Review of Accounting Studies · 2022-06-27

Supports due-diligence questions about ESG fund claims, portfolio conduct, disclosure scores and fees. US mutual funds are an adjacent population; no family-office effect is tested.

Original practical companion

An ESG Mandate Verification File: Testing Portfolio Claims Against Observable Conduct

Raghunandan and Rajgopal’s study of US ESG mutual funds shows why a family office should examine a manager’s claims, holdings and observable conduct separately. This companion develops a mandate-verification process that compares promised objectives with portfolio evidence, distinguishes disclosure from performance, and records the costs and limitations of assurance. It does not conclude that every ESG strategy is ineffective or recommend particular investments. The proposed controls translate findings from a historical mutual-fund sample into questions that a family office can test in its own manager oversight.

How does philanthropy influence the diffusion of knowledge? Impacts from donations on scientific publications and patents in STEM

Pontus Braunerhjelm; Arvid Malm; Johanna Palmberg; Per Thulin

The Journal of Technology Transfer · 2026-04-28

Supports philanthropic research-grant evaluation and funding-complementarity questions for family foundations. The studied units are Swedish institutions, disciplines and regions, not family offices or individual grants.

Original practical companion

Funding Knowledge Without Inventing Impact: A Family Office Research-Grant Evidence Plan

Philanthropic research funding should be evaluated through a chain of claims that distinguishes a grant, research outputs, knowledge use and broader social effects. Braunerhjelm and colleagues examine Swedish STEM funding, publications and regional patent applications from 2001–2015, finding associations that vary with the outcome and funding denominator. This companion proposes a grant evidence plan that records those distinctions, protects research independence and tests whether funding complements existing resources. It is a proposed governance design, not an estimate of the return or societal impact of any family’s grant.

Liquidity and prices: a cluster analysis of the German residential real estate market

Marcelo Cajias; Philipp Freudenreich; Anna Freudenreich; Wolfgang Schäfers

Journal of Business Economics · 2020-08-16

Separates price and time-based liquidity development across rental and investment markets, useful for testing whether geographic diversification also supports family cash obligations.

Original practical companion

Map Liquidity Before Growth: A Regional Property Allocation Review for Long-Horizon Families

Regional price growth and the speed of letting or selling describe different dimensions of property performance. This companion proposes a regional evidence review that keeps those dimensions separate, tests the dependence of a family portfolio on common local drivers, and translates the result into financing and monitoring decisions without treating a historical cluster as a buy recommendation.

Exploring the determinants of real estate liquidity from an alternative perspective: censored quantile regression in real estate research

Marcelo Cajias; Philipp Freudenreich; Anna Freudenreich

Journal of Business Economics · 2020-06-03

Examines slow and fast portions of rental marketing time rather than relying on a single average, relevant to cash planning and operational review of family-owned housing.

Original practical companion

Underwrite the Lease-Up Tail: A Vacancy Review That Does Not Hide Slow-Letting Homes

An average marketing period can conceal the properties that create the largest cash-flow interruptions. Building on censored-quantile research in German rental markets, this companion proposes a lease-up review that preserves unresolved listings, distinguishes local markets, and tests the upper tail of vacancy duration before capital or distributions are committed.

Empirical analysis of the illiquidity premia of German real estate securities

Thomas Paul; Thomas Walther; André Küster-Simic

Financial Markets and Portfolio Management · 2021-10-16

Distinguishes real-estate stocks, REITs and fund vehicles when evaluating illiquidity premia and cash-access assumptions.

Original practical companion

A Liquid Wrapper Is Not a Liquidity Promise: Reviewing Property Securities Before a Family Needs Cash

Listed property securities and property funds provide different routes to real-estate exposure, but their liquidity cannot be inferred from the asset-class label alone. This companion turns German evidence on illiquidity premia into a wrapper-specific review of tradability, redemption terms, valuation and the family’s actual cash obligations.

Asymmetric Patterns of Demand-Supply Mismatch in Real Estate

Gianluca Marcato; Anupam Nanda

The Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics · 2021-03-24

Investigates asymmetric demand-supply adjustment across cycles, informing negotiation records and scrutiny of changing buyer-seller bargaining conditions.

Original practical companion

When Bargaining Power Moves: A Property Transaction Review for Changing Market Conditions

A property's last valuation cannot describe the current willingness of buyers and sellers to transact. This companion proposes a negotiation review that separates reservation prices, observable market activity and family financing constraints, using research on asymmetric demand-supply adjustment to challenge mechanical extrapolation across property cycles.

House Prices and Flood Risk Exposure: An Integration of Hedonic Property Model and Spatial Econometric Analysis

Nam Bui; Le Wen; Basil Sharp

The Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics · 2022-11-15

Combines spatial and hedonic analysis of a Vietnamese flood event; useful for separating market discounts, legal status, physical exposure and recovery responsibilities.

Original practical companion

A Flood Discount Is Not a Loss Estimate: A Property-Level Resilience Dossier

Observed market repricing after a flood and the physical costs of future flooding are different quantities. This companion translates evidence from Ho Chi Minh City into a property-level dossier that separates hazard, damage, legal status, market response and recovery obligations before a family office treats a discounted property as an opportunity.

Mandatory climate risk disclosure, housing prices, and credit supply

Xi Chen

Review of Accounting Studies · 2026-07-09

Examines information asymmetry, housing prices and lender responses to disclosure mandates, challenging simplistic assumptions that transparency has a uniform price effect.

Original practical companion

Climate Disclosure Without an Automatic Markup: A Transparency Review for Property Owners and Lenders

Better information can change housing prices and credit supply in ways that differ from a simple risk-discount narrative. This companion proposes a disclosure review that treats transparency as an obligation and a decision input, while resisting the unsupported use of an average research estimate as a property-level valuation uplift.

Adjusting to the New Normal: River Flood Risk and the Real Estate Market

Henri Gruhl; Johannes Brehm; Arijit Ghosh; Philipp Breidenbach; Nils aus dem Moore

Environmental and Resource Economics · 2025-07-18

Shows heterogeneous housing-market responses after a salient flood, motivating review of exposed holdings even where market prices have not visibly adjusted.

Original practical companion

The Salience Blind Spot: Reviewing Flood Exposure Where the Market Has Not Repriced

A market that shows little reaction to a major flood elsewhere may still contain material physical exposure. This companion develops a regional flood-risk review that separates hazard, recent experience and observed price response, drawing on evidence that German housing markets updated unevenly after the 2021 Western European flood.

What Drives the Premium for Energy-Efficient Apartments – Green Awareness or Purchasing Power?

Carolin Pommeranz; Bertram I. Steininger

The Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics · 2020-03-18

Investigates interaction of energy efficiency, purchasing power and green awareness in rental pricing, informing more disciplined retrofit assumptions.

Original practical companion

Underwrite the Retrofit, Not the Green Premium: Energy Evidence for Family-Owned Rental Housing

Energy efficiency, tenant purchasing power and environmental preferences can interact in rental pricing, but an observed rent association is not a retrofit business case. This companion proposes a decision process that separates building performance, resident costs, lawful rent assumptions and capital recovery before a family commits to an energy project.

Tenant Mix and Retail Rents in High Street Shopping Districts

Song Zhang; Mark van Duijn; Arno J. van der Vlist

The Journal of Real Estate Finance and Economics · 2020-07-03

Studies tenant mix under fragmented high-street ownership, relevant to district dependencies and long-term retail-property stewardship.

Original practical companion

Steward the District, Not Just the Lease: A Retail Property Review of Tenant Mix and Shared Value

The economic setting around a retail property can matter as much as its own lease. Drawing on Dutch evidence linking tenant mix with high-street rents, this companion proposes a district-level diligence and stewardship process that examines complementary uses, ownership fragmentation and tenant viability without assuming that greater diversity always produces higher returns.
