How can I support motivation when learning moves home and ordinary routines break down?

This paper considers autonomous learning motivation during an abrupt loss of normal school support. It places parental autonomy support alongside mindset and burnout rather than presenting one factor as sufficient.

Who was studied?

97 Dutch adolescents in the main analysis; 76 complete parent–adolescent dyads for combined analyses.

Age / stage: Adolescence; approximately 11.5–19.8 years

Read with three questions

  1. What changed between the pre-pandemic and school-closure measurements?
  2. How did perceived autonomy support relate to autonomous motivation?
  3. What do the small sample and excluded incomplete dyads mean for interpretation?

Keep the limits in view

The naturalistic school-closure setting and small selective sample limit generalization. Associations with perceived support are not evidence that a specific parenting intervention caused motivation to improve.
