How do autonomy, psychological needs, and self-control fit together in a teenager’s learning?

The study relates perceived autonomy support to psychological needs, self-control, and academic motivation. It offers a vocabulary for discussing support that leaves adolescents ownership of their learning.

Who was studied?

427 high-school students recruited in Turkey through online convenience sampling.

Age / stage: 14–19 years

Read with three questions

  1. How were parental support, needs satisfaction, and self-control measured?
  2. What direct and indirect associations were reported?
  3. Why can a one-time mediation model not establish causal order?

Keep the limits in view

All variables were self-reported at one time point in a convenience sample. The statistical mediation model does not demonstrate causality or establish that changing parenting will produce a particular academic result.
