Employer-supported volunteering, including volunteer time-off (VTO), has been associated with positive work-related outcomes and may mitigate burnout. This report describes a five-year VTO initiative for faculty and staff at Baylor College of Medicine’s School of Health Professions. Leadership implemented targeted strategies to increase VTO participation and evaluated outcomes using time-off records and a post-program survey. VTO participation increased from 4% to 95%. Respondents reported high levels of community building, service learning, satisfaction, and organizational pride, with greater perceived benefits among faculty and individuals without prior volunteering experience. Self-determination theory was used as an analytic framework to interpret these findings.

A 90-day district inquiry
- Days 1–15 · Appraise. Read the source methods, recruitment, comparator, outcomes and limitations. Record how the study setting differs from your district and which claim the design can support.
- Days 16–30 · Design. Map one recurring source of staff workload with voluntary staff input. Agree one reversible schedule, support or task-allocation change and name its owner. Agree participation, privacy protections, baseline and stopping rules before starting.
- Days 31–60 · Observe. Collect the pre-agreed measures, keep a log of implementation changes and invite confidential voluntary feedback. Preserve existing support for staff and learners.
- Days 61–90 · Decide. Compare workload hours, a consistent voluntary wellbeing measure, absence and retention intentions with the pre-pilot baseline. Report response rates and avoid causal claims from an uncontrolled comparison. Make a dated decision to stop, revise or extend the inquiry.
