Editorial reading guide · Kindness
How do a mother’s empathy and an adolescent’s behavior influence their relationship over time?
Studies empathy as part of a two-way mother–adolescent relationship rather than a trait parents simply transmit. It is relevant to kindness during conflict because it examines support, conflict and antisocial behavior over time.
Who was studied?
Dutch adolescents and their mothers followed annually.
Age / stage: Approximately 13–18 years
Read with three questions
- Which relationship dimensions were measured alongside maternal empathy?
- Were the pathways only from parent to adolescent, or reciprocal?
- How did adolescent and mother reports contribute different information?
Keep the limits in view
The design does not prove causation and centers mothers in a predominantly Dutch sample. Related papers use the same RADAR cohort and should not be counted as independent replications.
