How is a back-and-forth reading experience measured at age two?
An early interactive reading measure is related to a later neuroimaging measure of executive function. Timing of measurements does not establish a neural effect of reading.
Who was studied?
Children with measures of parent–child dialogic reading at age two and frontal responses at age five.
Age / stage: Ages two and five
Read with three questions
- What does the later brain measure represent, and what competing factors could matter?
- Were the same families observed at each time point, and how were missing observations handled?
- How did the authors distinguish the adult’s participation from the child’s engagement?
Keep the limits in view
Following families over time helps establish temporal order. Baseline differences, changes outside the study and loss to follow-up can still influence associations.
