How can separated caregivers think about cooperation while taking a teenager’s sense of belonging seriously?

This study examines caregiver cooperation and conflict after divorce alongside adolescent autonomy and belonging. It represents family structures often absent from studies focused on intact couples.

Who was studied?

Dutch adolescents and divorced parents from 146 families.

Age / stage: 11–18 years

Read with three questions

  1. How were coparenting cooperation and conflict distinguished from parenting warmth?
  2. What between-family associations appeared?
  3. What did the absence of within-family lagged effects mean?

Keep the limits in view

No significant within-family effects showed that changes in coparenting predicted changes in autonomy or belonging. Self-reports and limited father reporting restrict causal and family-specific conclusions.
