Editorial reading guide · Independence

Can we make it easier for a parent to leave, stay connected by choice, and return?

Follows the whole leave journey, including childcare arrangements, concern about professional disconnection and preparation for resuming work.

Study context

13 female nurses from three hospitals in northern Taiwan.

Age / stage: Adult mothers from leave application through work return.

Read with three questions

  1. What motivated nurses to apply for leave?
  2. How did caring for a child and feeling disconnected coexist during leave?
  3. What preparations did participants describe for childcare and workplace readjustment?

Keep the limits in view

Interview accounts offer detailed experiences rather than a measure of policy effectiveness; the small Taiwanese hospital sample does not represent all working parents.
