The next frontier in sustainable aviation fuel procurement is the quality of the evidence attached to each transaction. Volume matters, but a volume target alone cannot describe a climate result.

What the sources establish

ICAO’s CORSIA methodology evaluates fuel lifecycle emissions in grams of CO₂ equivalent per megajoule. Its framework includes core lifecycle emissions, induced land-use change and eligible credits. ICAO permits default values and supported actual values under the applicable methodology. These accounting provisions do not mean every fuel pathway delivers the same reduction. [1]

Original analysis & proposed framework

Procurement has two deliverables

The first deliverable is fuel meeting the agreed technical and commercial conditions. The second is a claim that an auditor can reconstruct. Our proposed contract annex records pathway, feedstock, production region, emissions methodology, allocation approach and the party entitled to use the environmental attribute. A missing annex is not a minor communications problem: it makes comparison across suppliers unreliable.

Compare like with like

A low quoted carbon intensity can be misleading when boundaries differ. Ask whether a comparison uses the same baseline, includes the same stages and treats credits consistently. Separate physical delivery from any contractual attribute transfer. Do not assume that a marketing certificate, a corporate inventory and a regulatory compliance submission have interchangeable requirements.

Design a claims failure scenario

Imagine that a supplier’s evidence becomes unavailable after delivery. Who must correct the buyer’s public statement? Who retains supporting records, and for how long? These questions belong in procurement review before a campaign is launched. A cautious buyer can still invest in emerging supply while making narrow claims tied to what is actually demonstrated.

From reading to inquiry

Put the argument to work.

Owner: fuel procurement lead with sustainability accounting and legal review. Maintain a transaction-level evidence register and reconciliation of claimed attributes. Measure documented lifecycle intensity, unresolved evidence exceptions and claims corrected after audit. Suspend a claim if supporting records conflict or ownership of the attribute cannot be established.

This is a proposed governance approach, not legal or compliance advice. Eligibility must be checked against the rules applicable to the particular transaction and reporting period; no single percentage reduction is promised.
