"abstract": "The Ivy Plus Libraries Confederation (IPLC) Digital Scholarship Affinity Group assembled the Text Data Mining Education for Advocacy (TEA) Task Force to develop shared, open, and accessible educational materials to improve researchers’ literacy on the current influx of third party vendor Text Data Mining (TDM) platforms. This task force was specifically entrusted to examine use and limitations related to the “closedness” of each platform and the direct and collateral effects of the monetization of data on these systems for transparency, collaboration, cross-platforming, and publishing. This report offers constructive criticism of the opaque box, all-or-nothing approach that vendors are taking in order to offer information to support researchers, openness, and equity. Over the course of six months, this task force produced a literature review to examine the current discourse on these emerging platforms, as well as prototype user profiles to clarify researcher needs and evaluate whether the platforms actually meet those needs. This report reflects the results of those efforts to identify exciting new opportunities for assessing emerging TDM platforms.",

"abstract": "The recognition that researcher discretion coupled with unconscious biases and motivated reasoning sometimes leads to false findings (“p-hacking”) led to the broad embrace of study preregistration and other open-science practices in experimental research. Paradoxically, the\r\npreregistration of quasi-experimental studies remains uncommon although such studies involve far more discretionary decisions and are the most prevalent approach to making causal claims in the social sciences. I discuss several forms of recent empirical evidence indicating that questionable research practices contribute to the comparative unreliability of quasi-experimental research and advocate for\r\nadopting the preregistration of such studies. The implementation of this recommendation would benefit from further consideration of key design details (e.g., how to balance data cleaning with credible preregistration) and a shift in research norms to allow for appropriately nuanced sensemaking across prespecified, confirmatory results and other exploratory findings.",

"abstract": "This paper reports on a multi-method study investigating the impact of a high school course in data science. It reports on 3,163 students in 4 school districts and finds that more under-represented students take data science than other advanced courses; the students who take data science take more mathematics courses than those who do not, and the students who take data science are more positive about a future in STEM. Analysis of writing from 685 students shows that students are very positive about the course, appreciating the relevance of the content, the opportunity to investigate ideas, the chance to learn challenging, applied content, and the opportunity to think creatively. In an assessment of algebra and data given to students in data science and Algebra 2 courses in 2 districts, the students in data science scored at significantly higher levels.",

"abstract": "Too often, research into postsecondary workforce and engineering education focuses solely on curricula and ignores student matriculation to high-skill high-wage careers. The purpose of this study is to investigate this subject through dual ethnographies in Project-Based Learning (PBL) Career and Technical Education (CTE) workforce pathways in Silicon Valley. This study looks to better explain functioning pathways. The authors take inspiration from three publications: past research found that seven PBL essentials form good learning outcomes [1]; a measurable outcome of PBL is higher attendance [2]; to which Applied STEM CTE (AS-CTE) [3] framed attendance as a predictor metric of the efficacy of a workforce pathway. We ask which metrics help explain successful workforce CTE pathways. Our ethnography uncovers two distinct postsecondary PBL pathways and explores a new predictive metric of social mobility, which helps to reveal the pathways’ struggle to support marginalized students’ mobility into the high-skill high-wage building workforce. Despite these challenges, a Labor- Union-administered apprenticeship pathway showed promise in aiding social mobility. The authors uncovered early evidence that social mobility may be added as a metric to a predictive ontology framework of pathway success.",

"abstract": "Computing skills such as programming, graphic design, and networking are among the fastest growing in the modern workplace. Computing skills are increasingly critical in many roles including STEM (Malyn-Smith & Lee, 2012) and non-STEM occupations (Grinis, 2019). The American education system responded to this need by creating more educational opportunities for youth to prepare for these roles. For example, the number of California students attending schools offering a CS course has grown from 33.2% to 79.1% since 2010 (Bruno & Lewis, 2021). The growth is designed to support workforce readiness in computing-related occupations.",

"abstract": "This study asks the question: How do rural undergraduate engineering students perceive emerging technologies (ET) in relation to their educational and career goals? Conducting semi-structured interviews and using in vivo coding, results are grouped into three themes: defining emerging technology, choosing ET pathways in a sociocultural context, and academic and industry preparation. The findings highlight the complexity of aligning engineering education with evolving industry needs, especially as technologies like generative AI, advanced manufacturing, and biotechnology reshape the workforce. Students are drawn to ET for career aspirations, societal impact, or ethical and philosophical exploration, yet schools often lack opportunities to cultivate these interests. Out-of-school experiences, such as internships, play a key role in skill development. The study suggests that framing ET careers as a means to address societal challenges, rather than focusing solely on skill acquisition, could better align engineering programs with student aspirations. This research emphasizes the need to consider sociocultural factors when designing ET pathways and calls for a broader integration of ethical considerations into engineering curricula. Ultimately, this work challenges traditional engineering education models and advocates for more flexible, forward-thinking approaches to preparing students for an ever-changing technological landscape.",

Our speakers presented their work, followed by a Q&A addressing important questions such as the following: How can North American research librarians support scholars and students who want to learn more about the Black European experience and do so in respectful and responsible ways? How are the experiences of communities of color reflected in libraries and archives in Europe?",

"abstract": "This is a final report on Stanford University Libraries’ effort to digitize its complete music manuscript holdings. In 2017, we began a systematic review of our rare music holdings in order to identify, catalog, digitize and make available to the public all music score manuscripts and musicians’ letters in our collections. The resulting project encompasses manuscripts from the 12th through the 20th centuries, including full scores, excerpts, fragments, autograph quotations, documents, and correspondence. Over 1100 digital objects are being made freely available for close viewing and download through the SearchWorks library catalog, and Spotlight, Stanford’s online exhibit platform. Many of the manuscripts are part of the Memorial Library of Music collection, given to Stanford by George Keating in 1950; and most of these objects have had no online access until now. The presenter comments on the genesis of the project, and provide an overview of categories of materials, highlighting unusual items as well as opportunities for assistance in enhancing metadata. Post-project additions are also revealed.",

"abstract": "For her human rights capstone project, Vanessa Veak worked with the Cambodian Human Rights and Development Association to produce an executive summary on the issue of human trafficking in Cambodia and why the country now falls into a Tier 3 country, the lowest tier in addressing human trafficking, according to the U.S. Department of State’s annual Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report for 2022. The objectives of the report seek to understand and provide context to the human trafficking situation in Cambodia in the year 2022 and to discuss how governmental mechanisms in place are inadequate and lack sufficient effort in truly addressing this growing industry. Furthermore, this report seeks to deliver recommendations to survivors of trafficking and their families, anti-trafficking NGOs and CSOs, Cambodian local authorities and law enforcement, the Cambodian government, and destination countries in order to further combat the issue.",

"abstract": "Conservation documentation serves an invaluable role in the history of cultural property, and conservators are bound by professional ethics to maintain accurate, clear, and permanent documentation about their work. Though many well-documented schemata exist for describing the holdings of memory organizations, none are designed to capture conservation documentation data in a semantically meaningful way. Conservation data often includes deeply detailed observations about the physical structure, materiality, and condition state of an object and how these characteristics change over time. When included with descriptive catalog metadata, these conservation data points typically manifest in seldom-used fields as free-text notes written with inconsistently applied standards and uncontrolled vocabularies. Beyond the traditional scope of descriptive metadata, conservation treatment documentation includes event-oriented data that captures a sequence of steps taken by the conservator, the addition and removal of material, and cause-and-effect relationships between observed conditions and treatment decisions made by a conservator. In 2020, the Linked Conservation Data Consortium conducted a pilot project to transform unstructured conservation data into linked data. Participants examined potential models in the library field and ultimately chose to conform to the Comité International pour la Documentation (CIDOC) Conceptual Reference Model (CRM) for its accommodation of event-oriented data and detailed descriptive attribution. Project technologists worked with real report data from four institutions to create XML data models and map newly structured data to the CRM. The pilot group then imported CRM-modelled datasets into a discovery environment, developed queries to reconcile the divergent datasets, and created knowledge maps and charts in response to a small set of predetermined research questions. Feedback from conservators attending workshop activities revealed a shared need for conservation data standards and guidelines for those developing documentation templates and databases. Project outcomes signalled the necessity of further developing conservation vocabularies and ontologies to link datasets between institutions and from adjacent domains.",

"abstract": "For North American research libraries, collecting and maintaining print or digital access to foreign-language newspapers published outside North America is a significant challenge, one that will only increase in the coming years. The list of newspapers that are of value to researchers is long, yet fewer and fewer institutions can afford the cost and administrative burden of maintaining individual subscriptions to hundreds of titles from around the world. Both print and digital formats are expensive and difficult to maintain. The most stable and sustainable format, microform, is disappearing rapidly as vendors cease to offer it.\r\n\r\nThis informal discussion featured Judy Alspach (Area Studies Program Manager at the Center for Research Libraries) and Angela Cannon (Reference Specialist for Russia and South Slavic at the Library of Congress). Our speakers provided an overview of how various academic libraries and national institutions with large non-English-language and non-Roman-script newspaper holdings are dealing with this issue and how they have historically dealt with newspaper acquisitions in the pre-digital era before moving to a discussion of the current situation. Where is the common ground, and what are the challenges unique to a particular language/region? How can we work together to improve access to foreign-language newspapers in print and online formats?",

"abstract": "This report focuses on the role of vendors in preserving foreign-language newspapers from Eastern European sources. North American research libraries and institutions are interested in providing more extensive coverage for their users, but the vendor perspective reflects other needs, such as economic sustainability and the need to stay in business. What are the priorities for vendors working in this area? What avenues for future expansion are there, and what areas are not likely to be covered? What would vendors like libraries to know about how they negotiate with publishers in Eastern Europe? This report presents the results of a Question & Answer session with Bryan Benilous (East View Information Services) during the Slavic & Eastern European Discussion Group meeting on January 22, 2021.",

"abstract": "The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC) was one of the most diverse branches of the Black Freedom Movement, with more women and white members than almost any other Civil Rights organization at the time. From its founding in 1960, SNCC operated as a loving, egalitarian community. By the late 1960’s, however, many SNCC women were working in the Women’s Liberation Movement, but doing so separately; largely segregated by race, many of these former “sisters” were no longer on speaking terms. My thesis explores the breach between women in SNCC. I survey the impact of the personal and collective histories that Black and white women carried with them into SNCC, the race and gender dynamics within the organization, and two feminist manifestos produced by white SNCC women in 1964-65. These documents went on to be canonized as founding documents of second-wave feminism, but they were rejected by their Black SNCC colleagues, widening a gap between women that still exists today.",

"abstract": "Genetic studies of medical conditions increasingly rely on case definitions written as rules over electronic health records, and a single condition often has several. This study asked how much the genetic correlation between autism and its co-occurring medical conditions moves when only that definition changes. Using public FinnGen R12 summary statistics for 28 endpoints, including alternative definitions of epilepsy, sleep apnoea, insomnia, constipation and ADHD, together with GWAS of autism (18,381 cases) and four larger psychiatric traits, we estimated 217 genetic correlations with LD score regression and built a block-jackknife test for the difference between two correlations that share a trait, on one common set of 953,474 SNPs. Every definition was also mapped to SNOMED CT through the OMOP standard vocabularies. Nine of 135 comparisons between definitions of the same condition survived Bonferroni correction. Widening sleep apnoea to any sleep disorder raised the genetic correlation with every psychiatric trait, by 0.03 to 0.07, and all functional bowel disorders correlated 0.21 more strongly with PTSD than constipation defined by diagnosis or laxative purchase, while adding primary care records moved it by 0.013 at most. For autism, no definition effect survived correction, and constipation gave the same correlation under both definitions (0.11 and 0.12) when a shift of 0.21 was detectable. Shared cases made differences precise: for nested definitions the smallest detectable shift fell to 0.015. The SNOMED CT mapping revealed that the constipation comparison was also a comparison of clinical scope, and distance in SNOMED CT tracked how far correlations moved (Spearman 0.49) better than overlap in codes and data sources did (0.13). How a condition is defined in the health record can change what genetics says about it, and the size of that change can be measured.",
